This painting was done in a birch woods on Mt. Philo, not far from Lake Champlain in Vermont, USA. My sister Kathleen and I were out painting (paintin' and drinkin' as we used to call it – don't worry, it's not as bad as it sounds.) Our father had died suddenly a few months previously and we were both wrapped in the tender grief that follows the death of a parent. The June air was clear and fragrant and no one was around. The original painting from 1983 remains in my collection of personal favorites.
